Your garage door springs have a big job to do. They help balance the door, providing a counterbalance to the heavy door. When a spring breaks, you (and your vehicle) are all but trapped in the garage, because the door simply becomes too heavy to lift on your own.
Torsion springs often break because, like brake pads on a car, they wear down. Every time you open your garage door, it twists the spring. Twist it enough times, and the spring snaps. You’ll know when your springs break when:
- Your door only opens 3” to 8” – then it stops.
- If you disconnect from your garage door opener, the door will be extremely heavy
- If you look at the springs (which are mounted above the door on a bar), you will see a gap between the halves of the spring.
