Garage Doors FAQ

Garage Door Troubleshooting

1. Does my garage door need maintenance?

Your garage door is the largest moving part on your home, and perhaps the hardest working, being raised and lowered on average of six times per day. Like any other area of the home, it needs regular inspections and maintenance. We suggest that you perform the recommended garage door maintenance on an annual basis.

2. My garage door closes only if I hold in the push button!
The photo eyes are misaligned, dirty, or defective. They need to be aligned, cleaned or replaced.

3. Can Aladdin Doors fix my door after hours or on holidays?
Yes, Aladdin Doors provides 24/7 emergency service.

4. My garage door does not close?
If the door does not close and the light flashes on and off 10 times, check the photo eyes by the bottom of each track and make sure the indicator light on each eye is on and clear. If the light does not flash, then it is either the force on the operator needs adjustment or the cable on the garage door is off or broken. In these two cases, a garage door certified technician needs to make the proper repair and/or adjustment.

5. Does Aladdin Doors guarantee its work?
Yes, Aladdin Doors’ warranty is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. We stand by our work and offer life time warranty on most of the parts that are sold and installed by us.

6. My garage door goes up about a foot or two then stops!
Sounds like you have a broken spring. The springs are usually located on the top of the door; if one of them is broken, it will be hard to open the door even manually. You should contact us to discuss further or to make an appointment to replace the springs.

7. What is R-Value, and is it important?
R-value is a measurement of thermal efficiency of a garage door, or how well it insulates. Insulation is an important factor to consider when purchasing a garage door. If you plan to spend a lot of time in your garage, or if you have a room directly above or adjacent to your garage, you will want to purchase a garage door that offers a high R-value. If your garage is not attached to your house, or you are not concerned with insulation, you can purchase a door with a lower R-value or no garage door insulation at all.

8. The garage door won’t open or close with remote control!
There are several possible solutions:

  1. Check the lock button on the wall switch. If the wall switch is flashing, press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds. This will unlock the remote control.
  2. Move closer to the door (you might be out of range).
  3. Make sure that the antenna on the motor unit is hanging down.
  4. If the door functions fine with the wall switch, replace the battery in the remote.
  5. Reprogram the remote.

9. Can my neighbor’s remote control open my garage door?
If the opener does not have rolling-code technology, which changes the access codes each time the opener is used to prevent code grabbing, be sure to change the manufacturer’s standard access codes on the opener and remote control, or consider investing in a newer model with more safety and security features that are now standard. Otherwise, yes any newer remote may open your garage door.

10. Does Aladdin Doors fix broken springs?
Yes, Aladdin Doors technicians are broken springs specialists. We offer high cycle springs which last more than five times as much as other springs, so you change your garage door springs once and for all.

11. How do I choose my garage door?
Each homeowner has unique needs for a new garage door based on the desired styling, the level of care and maintenance required, the energy efficiency and the location of the garage in one’s home. Steps to determine which garage door best suits you are:

  1. Determine the material that best suits the care and maintenance that you desire. Aladdin offers garage doors made from steel, wood composite, wood and aluminum.
  2. Choose the door design that best complements your home, including window, color and decorative hardware options.
  3. Determine the level of energy efficiency and noise reduction that best suits your needs depending on if you have a room above or adjacent to your garage or have children that play in front of the garage. Most Aladdin doors are available with insulation or no insulation options.

12. Do I need a lock on my garage door?
If an electric garage door opener has been installed on your door, it may not be necessary to have a lock. Properly installed, electric openers can function as the lock, making it improbable that an intruder would be able to lift your door from the outside. If you have an older opener, check to see if your door can be lifted from the outside.
DASMA, the trade association for the garage door industry, discourages homeowners from attaching a lock when an opener has been installed, because too frequently a child or other family member will accidentally lock the door. If someone then tries to open the door using the electric opener, the opener will pull against the lock causing the door to be damaged.

If no opener is installed on your garage door, a lock is highly recommended. A standard Aladdin residential steel door is sold without locks since most garage doors are used with garage door openers. Optional locks may be purchased with the garage door.
